The Diabetic Foot: Do’s & Don’ts

Hey there! If you’ve got diabetes, you know it’s a full-time job keeping everything in check. One thing that often gets overlooked is foot care, but trust us, it’s super important. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. Let’s talk about the do’s and don'ts to keep those toes in tip-top shape.

1. Check Your Feet Every Day

  • Give your feet a daily once-over. Look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or anything unusual. Use a mirror or ask someone to help if you’re struggling. Your feet will thank you!

2. Wash Your Feet Daily

  • Keep them clean with lukewarm water and mild soap. Pat them dry carefully, especially between your toes. You don’t want any moisture hanging around causing trouble.

3. Moisturise, Baby!

  • Slather on some moisturiser to keep your skin soft, but skip between the toes. We’re hydrating, not marinating. If you suffer from a lot of hard skin, try a moisturiser with a urea content.

4. Trim Those Toenails

  • Cut your nails straight across and file the edges. No one’s got time for painful ingrown toenails.

5. Wear Comfy Shoes and Socks

  • Your shoes should fit like a dream—no squeezing or sliding! And always wear socks. They’re like little foot hugs.

6. Move That Body

  • Try to keep moving regularly. Walking is great, or even just a potter around the house. If you struggle to get going, Wiggling your toes and moving your ankles in circular motions is better than nothing!

7. Keep Blood Sugar in Check

  • Keeping your blood sugar stable helps prevent foot problems. It’s all connected, folks.

8. See a Podiatrist Regularly

  • Regular visits to a “foot doctor” can catch issues before they become big problems. Think of it as a foot MOT.

Don't

Don't -

1. Don’t Walk Around Barefoot

  • Whether you’re inside or outside, always wear shoes. Sensation loss is a common side effect (Neuropathy). Protect those feet from any sneaky injuries.

2. Don’t Use Hotwater bottles, Electric blankets or Heating Pads

  • Your feet might not feel heat the same way, and you don’t want any accidental burns.

3. Don’t Ignore Foot Pain

  • If something hurts or looks off, get it checked out pronto. Better safe than sorry!

4. Don’t Try and Treat Corns or Callus Yourself

  • Leave it to the professionals! You are more likely to cut yourself and with delayed healing, this could lead to some serious problems.

5. Don’t Smoke

  • Smoking messes with your circulation. If you smoke, think about quitting for the sake of your feet (and the rest of you).

6. Don’t Wear Tight Shoes or Socks

  • Tight footwear can cause blisters and restrict blood flow. Comfort is key.

7. Don’t Wait to Seek Help

  • If you spot a sore, infection, or anything unusual, call your healthcare provider right away. Early intervention is crucial.

Taking care of your feet doesn’t have to be a drag. Follow these tips, and you’ll keep your feet happy and healthy. Got any concerns? Your doctor or podiatrist is just a call away. Let’s keep those feet healthy!
